Las Vegas Travel Guide (For the more mellow traveler)

Las Vegas has been a place that I have enjoyed going since I was a little girl! Being so close to San Diego has made it a great place for a weekend getaway. When we were younger we would do the family friendly events, then I hit my 20's and got to experience 'real' Vegas, but now that I am married in my 30's Vegas looks a little different and I love it! We have learned how to get the best of all worlds while coming home feeling like we actually got a vacation.

Where to Stay:

When looking for a place to stay, it is important to think of if you want to be on or off the strip. There are so many options either way but we found staying off the strip to be way more relaxing and a great way to feel like you are in Vegas without being in the center of the crazy!

Red Rock Casino Resort and Spa is one of my favorite hotels ever. They have a hotel, pool, spa, 60 lane bowling alley, 16 screen movie theater, 12 dining options ranging from fast food to fine dining, 24 hour room service, Kids arcade, and a full casino. The pool is relaxing and beautiful, and the rooms will either look out on the strip (in the distance) or over the Red Rock Mountain Range. The casino is great but without the intense smoke smell! This is somewhere that is good for the whole family, and if you want to go to the strip it is only a short car ride away. This is where we will definitely be staying from now on. (Pictures are from their website as mine did not turn out great!)

If you want to stay on the strip there are quite a few options such as; the Venetian, the Bellagio, Park MGM, or may more, but pay more for a high floor or strip view. If you don't you may be stuck looking a the wall of another hotel. Also, ask for a non smoking room as you will need the reprieve from the smell of smoke that tends to follow you back to your room after walking back from the casino floor.

Things to Do:

There is so much to do in Las Vegas, but if you are looking to stay away from the regular nightclubs, and bars, here are some great options for you.

SpeedVegas

If you are looking for the ultimate adrenaline experience look no further. Just a short drive away from the strip, Speedvegas is the place for you. They offer quite a few different packages, but their most known experience is the opportunity to drive an exotic sports car 100++ mph around a racetrack. They also offer: go karts, drifting ride along, exotic car ride along, off-roading track, and they will soon be offering desert ATVs. This was by far one of the coolest experiences! You arrive, take a course on how to drive the course, do a quick ride along in order to learn the track, then you get in a car with an instructor and get to drive yourself. It is a bit pricey but worth the memories, and a truly unique experience.

The Mob Museum

Located in an old courthouse towards Fremont St. the Mob Museum is something you should not miss! for about $30 you can get a general admission ticket to view the history of the Mob. This Museum is one of the most interesting I have ever been in, and you can add on interactive experiences, or even visit the Prohibition Era Speakeasy in the basement. We took about 2 hours here, but could have easily stayed longer.

The Las Vegas Strip:

While you may be staying a while off the strip, it is still worth taking a walk down and seeing. There is so much to see while walking down the street. You could see the Bellagio Fountain Show, the Pirate Ship at TI, the malls inside the Venetian and Caesar's Palace, the Bellagio Botanical Gardens, and so much more. It may not be a place you want to spend the night, but it is worth going down and exploring the many casinos, restaurants, and just the people. The one thing to keep in mind, is if you have kids the daytime may be a better option as at night it does tend to get a bit wild.

Shows:

Seeing a show is a timeless Vegas tradition. With the choices of comedy, variety, magic, burlesque, Cirque, the options seem endless. If you are looking for comedy and Magic, I highly suggest Piff the Magic Dragon. He is funny and the magic doesn't dissapoint. You can always catch one of the Vegas classics of the Blue Man Group, David Copperfield, Cirque, Donny Osmond, and many more. Show prices can be high so I suggest buying early if this is something you are interested in.

The possibilities of what to do in Las Vegas are endless. On top of all of this, they are adding a Formula 1 track right off the strip, and working on getting an MLB team. It is a place that can be for more than the 21st birthday party. I would not count Vegas out as a family vacation spot, as long as you know where to go and where to avoid!
